"If-" He started to say, before remembering the rule about not whining. If Lady had just let Silkia and him stay together, she could've killed it. "Alright, I'll remember." He attempted to listen to the sounds of the forest, not an easy thing for a city kid. "Why is that bed? Bear cubs are rather small, aren't they?"

"The cubs, but not their mothers..." Lanz told him. He pulled a small knife out of his boot and handed it to the boy. "It's not much, but it's better that you have it. I have my staff." In an instant, it was in his hand and ready.
And, just as he had suspected, there was a tiny baby bear cub munching on some fruit that had fallen to the ground. Guilt panged in his stomach. As hungry as he was, he hardly had the heart to slay a cub. He sighed and shook his head.
"Lady really is putting me to the test."

Crouching down by the fire Kat tried not to be sick at the thought of food so early in the morning. All of the boys had wandered off somewhere looking for food but she stayed beside the fire. That was until she heard Lanz calling to Jake about a bear from in the forest. After a moment of considering whether or not she should leave them and see if Jake got eaten she stood and walked in the general direction of the noise.
Before she reached them she could hear the bear and Lanz saying something about Lady testing him. "I'll kill it if you don't want to." She said, eying the baby bear, "Or we could leave it, I really don't want to deal with an angry mama bear because you were hungry."

"Right." Jake said, nodding. He looked at the tiny bear cub, wondering if that was what they were supposed to kill. "Are we going to kill that? It's kind of small..." He turned, as Kat came through the forest. "You have a gun, don't you? Couldn't you just shoot the adult bear if it came after us?"

Kat glared at Jake, "I highly doubt my Beretta would stop an angry bear. Now, if I had been allowed to bring my sub-machine gun I wouldn't be worried. As is I'd probably have to unload a whole magazine into the thing's skull to do much damage."

"You could shoot an adult bear 10 times and it wouldn't go down unless there was a perfect shot to the head. Adult bears are crazy impenetrable like that. I went at one once before I was able to do my thing," Lanz told Jake. "They're scary."
He watched the cub go behind a tree.
"Bear meat is good, though."

"So, I could go back an get some grenades to toss at the mama if it shows up." Kat told Lanz, "Probably our best chance. I'm a decent shot but I'm not good enough to get the bear down fast. It'll only take me a second to get the grenades and then you can kill the cub and we can get back to camp." She motioned over her shoulder toward the camp.

"I wish the damn bear would just die of natural causes. I feel bad for killing something in its youth. But that's survival for you, I guess. Will you do the honor of killing the bear, Kat?" Lanz asked, rubbing his forehead. "A cub has a lot of meat on it. I'll do us all well, I think."

"More things die in their youth than survive, and if Lady put it on this planet it must have a purpose, so it only lives so that it can be killed in the first place." Kat said, pulling her Beretta and aiming at the bear. "And if we're to survive we need to eat, human life is more important than animal life."
She pulled the trigger, not even wincing as the bullet hit home and the bear fell. "Hurry already before the mama shows up and we have problems."

Though she was cold, Kat had a perfect point, and wasting no time, Lanz went to drag the bear back to the center of the clearing. He took the knife out of Jake's hands.
"Thanks Kat. Now I'm going to show you how to skin a bear, Jake. You're going to need to do this for me while I go look for other stuff. Rocutia said we needed a three course breakfast." Lanz wasn't even sure how to properly skin, and his manner was very crude, but efficient. He sliced the skin at the spine and began using the knife to scrape everything but the meat away. "You can finish. Put the meat on a rock to sit until the fire gets going. Then you can cook it, right?"

"Well Lanz, I think we've already got three courses. If power bars count as a course and Jerez ever shows back up with fruit." Kat said, watching in amusement as Lanz attempted to teach Jake how to skin the bear. It's not like you'll need much of the stuff anyway, I'll take a bite of everything to sow there's enough for everyone and then you boys can have the rest."
You should eat, there will be enough for the four of you. Ai said, looking through Kat's eyes at the camp. Already you have enough to feed yourselves if not for the requirements.
Food in the morning is a disgusting concept.

"Maybe... maybe we could make like... a fruit salad or something. As odd as that sounded. It'll get us more points than something normal and bland! Don't you guys feel the need for a competition? We gotta do better than this!" Lanz suddenly said, a bit more enthusiastically than he expected. Oh well, he thought. Lady appreciated enthusiasm.

"Fine, fine. I'll go see if I can find some different kind of fruit." Kat wandered off with a shake of her head. Enthusiasm was one thing when you were doing something interesting, but for breakfast? There seemed to be plenty of those trees with the fruit from last night but little else. Finally she stumbled upon a different kind of tree with low-hanging branches.
Reaching up she bent one and shook it until fruit hailed down on her. "How the hell am I supposed to carry them?" She demanded of the air. Realizing her jacket was back in camp she swore and then sighed, she was wearing a sports bra that she had no problem running around Atlantis in so why would it be a problem here. Deciding to follow Jerez's example she stripped off her loose shirt she piled fruit into it and headed back to camp. Looking down she realized that she could once again practically count her ribs, that was bad, maybe she should eat something today.

((OOC: A bear cub. Lol... By the way, the berries from coffee trees actually have to dry out for a while, then they are roasted, so it's not quite practical to use the coffee plant to make coffee this quickly, but since it's Lady Hammer's world, I'll just assume that you can pick off the coffee already dried and roasted. XD))
After a while, Jerez returned from his venture. His shirt was slung behind his back, bulging with weight. "There's definately plenty." He said, with a smile. He set his shirt down on the ground and the pile of fruits and berries and herbs was revealed. "Wild basil," he said telling anyone who would hear as he picked up a couple leaves, "to season whatever meat Lanz can catch," he set it on a corner of his shirt, "and some wild mint, for tea." he set the bunches of mint on a different corner.
"I also found a creek, but I don't know what I can carry the water back in." He was a bit dissappointed in his own lack of resourcefulness.

"Where's the creek?" Kat asked as she came back into camp, dropping her shirt full of fruit next to Jerez's. "I've got a canteen somewhere and I need a run anyway." She disappeared into the cabin for a moment, coming back with her bag and a canteen. Dropping the bag she waved the canteen at Jerez, "Directions would be nice so I don't spend ages stumbling around looking for this creek."
