Looking up
At a darkening sky
While swirling round me
Snowflakes fly
I may have
Lived, laughed, cried
Here, in this house
But, if I said it’s home, I lied
City noises
Fade into the stars
They aren’t the same here
Shadowing the moon
No branches as inky bars
Close my eyes
Remember home
When I look around
There is silence; I’m alone
The road is quiet
The bushes stilled beside me
One that once sheltered a nest
Has now grown into a tree
A little turkey hen
Her secret hidden nest
On the lonely hillside
I’d come with darkness then:
Alone at my behest
Turning, I walk over
The steep hillside, down
To the stream I know so well
Always, changing with flooded ground
Starlight reflects faintly
Off the black water
So long ago now
I watched the black shadow with her
My friend and I
Staring into the clear creek
The thick lithe eel
Slipping from one bank to the next
What does the eel seek?
Kneeling, icy water meets
My fingertips, stretched out
To the black water, my hand lets
Moonlight, sprinkled in crystal droplets, out
I move away, along the flats
The creek swirls into well known places
Memories flit around like ghosts
So thick I’m covered before many paces
Standing, I stare into a pool of darkness,
Now diamonded with starlight
That I’ve seen since childhood
Memories are deep embedded,
Swirling in my sight
I was young, of few years
The pool was dark and deep
The silver flashes of fish
Were mystery, they splash and leap
Later, an older me
Leaping across the stream I be
Water barely past my ankles
More, it was sand tripping me
Once again the years flick past
Two friends and I
Daring each other to jump
Into icy water, over our heads
Of course we all jump. Why?
We are all friends, dripping and squealing
We’re silly, but loyal. If one, then all
We’re now frozen to the bone
But first, a daring addition to our fall
Swim right across, leaving
Our safe perch
Without drowning, but we all go
Me starting with a lurch
Slightly older once more
This time just one friend
She dares me
I leap, and then-
Drenched again.
With a shake of my head
I’m back at the start
Or the end,
Alone, trying to figure my heart
Memories wash over me
As I stand in the night
By the creek alone,
The moon shining over the sight
Of me, staring around
Memories rushing thick and fast
The mere idea of future
Lost in the broken faces
Of the past
At a darkening sky
While swirling round me
Snowflakes fly
I may have
Lived, laughed, cried
