The cabin was rather cold with two bunks and a large lantern against a wall that lit as soon as Lady walked inside. There was a light layer of frost on her hair, and goosebumps along her flesh. The woman let out a shivering sigh.
"Veritas, I'd like you to get accustomed to Berlebian tradition and take up a spot at my side."
A dire tiger not quite as large as Rocutia entered the cabin, her face a little more narrower than the other female's, and with whiskers twice as long.
"Am I babysitting?"
"Not quite," Lady said. "You're in charge of a team to judge character. Make sure that they show up."
"Will I be dealing with Rocutia?" the tiger asked. Her stare was a bit cold, which slightly intimidated the goddess. Though Veritas wasn't near as old as the mother tiger Rocutia was, she had a chill bite about her.
"No, no. Rocutia is in charge of her own team. You shouldn't have to deal with her."
Veritas looked around and cleared her throat.
"Well then, who is in my team?"

The pounding of hooves was the first warning of Jayden's arrival. Moments after the sound could be heard at the cabin a buckskin mare burst from the woods, her rider sat easily on her back despite the fast pace. The mare stopped without a single tug of the reins, simply halting before the cabin. Looking around the rider tipped her head to the side, waist length black hair tumbling over her shoulder.
She was a pleasant looking woman, not the most beautiful but attractive enough to catch attention. When she dismounted she was quite tall and wearing a chain mail shirt, the sleeves cutting off at her elbow to reveal a long sleeved black shirt underneath. Her eyes caught on the tiger and she smiled slightly. I am Jayden of Narit Bay, and I suppose I am on your team, fair tiger. Out of habit she spoke with her mind and not her voice.
Beside her the horse snorted and tossed it's head, eyes rolling in fear as it watched the tiger, but it stayed next to it's rider. Calm, Lanai, it won't hurt you. She stroked the mare's cheek softly and petted the star in the middle of her forehead.

The rustle of clothing and the snapping of twigs underfoot were the only signs betraying Jarroc's arrival before the cabin. He was so practised at moving unseen it had become second nature for him to travel in such a fashion, even if no occasion called for it. He stood tall, his muscular shoulders thrown back, his strong jaw and prominent eyes held level at a ninety-degree angle from his neck. He surveyed his surroundings calmy, his eyebrows slightly raised as he absorbed the appearance of the quaint cabin before him.
All eyes were on Jarroc as he crossed the threshold, but he met none of them. Instead, he surveyed the room appraisingly for a moment, then removed his cloak in a casual manner and flung it over one of the bedsteads. He was revealed to be wearing a pair of slightly weathered leather breeches, which were hidden at the waist by a, somewhat grander, long white tunic with intricate embroidery around the neckline and fastened loosely at the waist by a thin silk rope. His tall black boots resonated pleasantly on the wooden floor as he crossed to the center of the room, produced a winning smile out of nowhere, and proclaimed in a cheerful voice,
"Sorry I'm late."

"Hello." Jayden said to the man who entered the cabin, giving him a soft smile before pushing past him out of the cabin. As soon as she stepped out of the door Lanai approached her. Jayden untacked the horse quickly and returned to the cabin, resting the saddle and bags against the wall next to her bed. Stay the night outside wherever you wish, just don't wander far, we don't know what's in these woods. She told the horse before collapsing on a bed. It had been awhile since whe slept in anything but a tent, even the cold cabin was a pleasant change from that.

I walked into the cabin, Seth's warm arm draped around my shoulders. "We're in your cabin." I said quietly. Lupus... I sighed. Things haven't been the same since he was shot.
Seth walked forward, tail waving back and forth behind him happily."Yep! I'm Seth, and that fair maiden is Mysty." What was he doing? Partially shifting was all right, but to just walk into a cabin and surprise people like that? Completely rude.
"Yeah... I'm Mysty." I walked forward to join Seth, as he looked over our team mates. Not the best, but they would do.

Jayden glanced at the boy and girl entering. The boy had a tail and was apparently named Seth. "Hey. I haven't seen shape shifters in ages..." She tried to remember the last time one had visited with ther fair when she was a child, "Well, in ages. What's your full form." A shiver ran through her body. With a hiss of annoyance Jayden waved her hand and summoned a burst of hot, dry wind like those from the desert of her home. "That's better."

"A wolf." Seth smiled, enjoying himself. "Mysty is one as well, but has refused to shift since-" I shut him up with a hard punch in the arm. What happened to Lupus was my fault, and not these people's business.
"Yeah, I am. It's quite an interesting experience actually, to shift into another form."
"You hit me! What the heck was that for?" Seth asked, looking like he had just been hit with a steel bat.
"Because you have a big mouth."

Rolling her eyes at their fight Jayden stared up at the ceiling. "I'm not a shifter but I am an elemental. And a war magician when it comes down to it." She rubbed the tattoo on her arm, it's symbol showed the Power she had been gifted with, "I always wondered what it would be like to shift, since I can talk to the animals. It would be nice to know how to become one. But that Power is rare, and not often found inside the Empire."

The harsh shriek of stone on metal pierced the conversation in the room like an arrow. Jarroc was sitting on one of the lower bunks, one leg resting on his knee, sharpening his silver dagger with a small rock. It was stunning in design, the gilt handle wrought into so many twisting shapes it appeared almost more a piece of artwork than a weapon. A small tanzanite stone was inlaid into the knotwork, its hues forming a world as deep and mysterious as the cosmos itself. It was, however, a weapon to be feared. The blade was thin and inlet slightly at the end to form a sort of semi-scythe. Its deadly contours became even more pronounced as Jarroc worked the stone upon it, and it glinted forebodingly in the light of the cabin.
"I'm afraid my only 'powers' are ones I've worked for," Said Jarroc, as matter-of-factly as one who didn't have a knife in their hand, "But they've never let me down." He winked, and replaced his dagger to a small sheath strapped to his breeches.

"Knives in the dark and swords on a battlefield take no real power." Jayden said, glancing over at Jarroc as he sharpened his knife and winced at the noise it made, "They take training, yes, but any idiot can learn to put a knife through another's back if he has the time. Don't be so proud of it."

Jarroc stopped his work abruptly, and a look of steel pervaded his countenance that could have drawn blood. He rose slowly and walked with forced repose over to Jayden, then bent over slightly so their faces were within an inch of eachother's. His usually vibrant eyes were now cold and narrowed, and he gave her a harsh look up and down before he hissed,
"So, you think any brute can pick up a knife an do what I do?" His voice was like shattering ice, "Ignorant, conceited little girl! Perhaps the people you speak of are the ones beneath the poppy fields. True guile and precision cannot be learnt, and the ones who have them are the only ones who survive in this world." He began to pace in slow circles around her, like a shark trapping its prey. "Yet you, a foolish child who makes tablecloths flutter slightly and calls herself an elementalist, dare insult me? Well mark my words, be careful what you say to me in the future. I'm not one to hesitate before a kill."
And with one last, vile look he continued sharpening his knife.

Jayden laughed slightly at Jarroc's threats, "Yes, I think what you do can be learned if one has enough time and a teacher with enough patience. If an idiot can be king of the greatest empire in the history of the world any common man can become an assasin or a warrior." She watched out of the corner of her eye as he continued to sharpen his knife.
"And I would not insult my Power if I were you, I can do much more than call a bit of wind, that's for town witches that call themselves elementals. You don't want to see what happens when I use real Power." She stamped down any frustration with the man, losing control was not the impression she wanted to make on these people. "If you did succeed in killing me, well, you wouldn't live through the aftermath. Neither would these children or half of this forest."
