As Kat stood, frozen and staring at the car in her driveway, a man approached her. He stepped down from the front porch of the house and came up behind her. “Miss West?”
Kat jumped and turned to face him quickly, face falling when she saw his uniform. “Yes Officer?” She had tuned him out even before he started talking, catching only the words ‘Dead’ and ‘Father’.
Before the officer could stop her Kat opened the front door, rushed in, and slammed it behind her. There was a faint grinding noise as she locked and bolted it. “Just…leave me alone, come back tomorrow or something. I need…I need to rest.”
Kat leaned against the door breathing raggedly as tears ran down her face followed by trails of mascara. A sob escaped her and she pressed a hand to her mouth to restrain it, somehow feeling that the dark house should remain quiet. She shuffled forward in the dark and yelped as her foot hit a pile of books on the floor in the entryway, concealed by the complete blackness.
The feeling of silence shattered, a light flipped on, and Kat screamed.
BREAK
A rough hand clamped over Kat’s mouth. “Please don’t do that again.” The voice was soft and male with a thick Australian accent. “Just go along with this and I won’t have to hurt you. Please, I really don’t want to hurt you.”
The man’s grip was loose and unsure on her arm and the hand over her mouth was slick with nervous sweat. Kat mumbled something against his palm, muffled beyond recognition. “What?” He demanded. She repeated the mumble. “Fine, fine. Say it again?” He removed his hand from her mouth, placing it tightly on her arm instead.
“You don’t seem like much of a criminal.” Kat told him scornfully, though there was fear in her voice. “What are you here for?”
“I’m not much of a criminal, no, and I don’t want to be. It was just my bad luck to draw this assignment.” He sighed and released one of her arms for a moment.
“Assignment?!” She demanded, trying to run as soon as his hand dropped away from her arm.
“Would you stop struggling? It would make this easier on both of us if you just calmed down Miss West.” The man’s grip returned, stronger this time, and he pulled her back to his chest. One of his arms looped around her stomach and pinned both of her arms to her sides while his other hand brushed her hair away from her neck.
“What are you doing?” Her voice had risen to a yell and she struggled violently against his grip.
“Calm down Miss West, not what you think I’m doing.” A moment later a needle bit into the side of her neck and she went limp almost instantly. The man let out a sigh of relief and threw her limp body over his shoulder easily.. “You need to eat more girl, you weigh nothing.” He muttered, shaking his head. A soft green glow filled the entryway moments later and when it was gone so were the man and his captive.
