An old, rusty car came clattering into her driveway, giving two weak honks. Sarah finished touching up her makeup and ran out the front door, giving a quick hug to her mom before she left. "I'll call you when it's over!" Sarah yelled over her shoulder. She slipped into the ripped back seat beside Sam. A strange boy was sitting in the front. He was making signs with his hands. "Who's that?" Sarah asked quietly, nodding to him. "Oh, that's George, my older brother. He's mute. He says 'Hi, nice to meet you!'"
"Oh. Hi Jeorge....!" Sarah said loudly.
"Do you need to talk so loud? He's mute, not deaf!" Sam scolded, giving a snotty laugh.
"Okay, we're here!" Sam's mother declared. The vehicle slowed to a creaking stop. Everyone got out of the car and into the church.
She looked around nervously, not sure where to go. She followed Sam into the church's gym, where teens stood around talking. The approached the biggest group of people, where about six teens stood talking. "Hey everyone, this is my friend Sarah from school!" she said. Everyone waved, introducing themselves. A brown haired boy, about two inches shorted than Troy, smiled at her. "I'm Daniel. Nice to meet you." Sam grinned. "Well, I'm gonna go talk to our youth pastor, pastor Tim. You get to know everyone!" she exclaimed, running off.
She found this so weird, Sam socializing and having friends? It was hard to believe. At school she was so unpopular, a loner. Well, whatever. She could talk to these people as long as they didn't go all God-talk on her.
I bet they'll last two minutes before they start talking about God.. she thought. "Oh, you'll never guess what God did for me the other day, it was so awesome, you'll hardly believe it.." The girl who had introduced herself as Emily began. Wow. Not even thirty seconds. She walked away, leaning against of of the white gym walls. She wasn't going to listen to this.
Daniel noticed and came up to her. "Hey, why'd you leave?" he asked. She grunted in response. "Oh, I see. You're not too comfortable when we talk about God, right?" She looked away, staring at the black stage, where a boy was tuning his guitar. Daniel laughed. "It's okay. I know how you feel. Your friend invites to youth group, then runs off expecting you to be friendly and talk to a bunch of people you don't know." His voice was quiet, and he spoke in a light, understanding voice, with a hint of a chuckle in it.
"Why are you speaking so quietly?" she asked.
"He's just like that!" Sam informed her, back from talking to the youth pastor. Sarah jumped. "You scared me!"
(to be continued... Man.. this s a pretty ranting chapter so far..)
