The girl opened her mouth, about to reply, but James beat her to it. “Don’t even bother Zeta. What harm could it do? Besides, I trust her.” He calmly turned to me. “First of all, this is my sister Zeta, and my name is Zohn, not whatever crazy name she came up with and told you. I believe you are Alice?” He waited for my nod before continuing, “Well, to us, you will Capricorn.” I opened my mouth to protest, but he simply ignored me and pressed on. “We are members of a fairy clan, the Briela. The first fairy, Misty, is the creator of all magical creatures: the elves, the kelpies, the sprites, pixies, and other fay folk. All was well and the different fay stayed with their own kind until one of Misty’s daughters fell in love with an elf. They eloped and had six children. We–,” he gestured from himself to Zeta, “–are the Briela.”
Here he paused for breath and I pounced, “You expect me to believe this!” I shouted incredulously. “Mythical creatures are called mythical for a reason. They are myths, nothing more.” Towards the end my outburst, I faltered as Zohn began to change before my eyes. Out of his head emerged two, glistening, bright red, curly antennae. Wings unfurled from his back, a splendor of sparkling red in the feeble rays of sun that managed to filter through the trees. Barely noticeable was the change his ears were undergoing, growing more pointed by the second. Finally he stopped and stared at me.
I heard a sigh next to me and jumped at the sound, because for a moment all had stood still. I looked beside me with wide eyes and Zeta, too, began to change. Her antennas were purple, contrasting with everything she wore. Her wings, I could see, were also a shimmering purple shade. I blinked several times and rubbed my eyes, “I’m dreaming,” I muttered, unbelieving. He laughed and came to sit next to me, one hand draped over my shoulder.
“No. We’re real, and we have a real job to preform.” His face grew grim as he continued, “Just as there are good mythical creatures, there are bad. In short, there are the vampires. We are after Ember and her dragon Kayden, who are on a killing spree. It has gotten to the point where it is becoming so noticeable that it is imperative we execute her immediately. Unfortunately, she is unusually powerful, so they had to call on us, the last remaining Briela.”
Shaking my head I looked from Zeta to Zohn, “And what does this have to do with me?”
He smiled, “You my little friend are going to become a dragon rider.” At that moment I noticed Zeta had produced an egg from somewhere and held in her hands. She handed it to me. It was blue, decorated with thin, light blue markings that coiled around it, and a collection of white spots on the top.
It spoke to me in a calming voice, “I am Benge, guardian of Ice. You and I will be faced with great and perilous danger but all I seek in return for your protection is friendship. Do you accept?”
“Yes,” I muttered in a hushed voice, still unsure what I was agreeing to. Then a jagged crack appeared in the side of the egg.
