What was I thinking? I sat in the cold metal chair, looking around the drab office. I watched, as the policeman picked up his phone, ready to dial the number I had given him.
"Hello? Yes, this is the police. I have your daughter here, and we- No, she's not hurt. We caught Mysty spray-painting the water tower. So you will pick her up? Great. Thanks, bye." He walked over to where I sat, a small smile on his tired-looking face.
"Did you have to call my parents Dave?" I muttered, kicking the trash can.
"Probably not; I just thought it would be funny. So, are you going to tell me what possessed you?" He asked, winking, trying to make light of the situation.
It doesn't work.
"What's the point?" I snapped. "I'm still going to get in trouble."
"Nah. If you want, I'll talk to your parents. But you have to tell me why you did it." He said, still finding me amusing for some odd reason.
"Because I was bored." I said, looking down. "Because I was forced to move away from everything I knew and loved."
"I see. The whole teenage angst thing, right?" A bell rings in the distance, and he stood. "Sounds like your ride is here. Anything you want me to say?"
"Ask them not to kill me?" I said, my first joke of the night. He laughed and walked out, off to go talk to the Grim Reaper.
Crap, crap, crap, crap. He's going to talk to my parents, and I'm going to die. I thought, remembering all of the graffiti up there. Okay, it wasn't ALL me. But a lot of it was, and I was pretty sure my mother would not be amused.
She wasn't.
Mom walked in, with that look on her face that said, If you say one word, I'll kill you. So I stayed quiet.
We got in the car, the silence building an invisible wall between us, one that was only getting stronger by the minute. "Mom, I-"
"What is wrong with you? We thought your behavior would improve after you got used to living here, but it's only gotten worse! You don't talk to anyone, you spend all your time on that damn computer, that is when you're not spray painting water towers! Believe it or not Mysty, I actually prefer the computer obsession!"
"It was a wall last week..." I muttered, referring to her comment about the spray paint.
I instantly regretted it.
"Excuse me? You are in no position to argue with me, young lady. Just wait until your father gets home... Oh, and for the record? I don't care what you spray paint..."
Blah, blah, blah, I thought, pretending to listen as my mother lectured me AGAIN. Does she ever stop talking? So boring.
At last, we pulled into the driveway, and got out of the car.
"Go to your room, Mysty." My mom said stiffly, clearly upset. "And I don't think you will be going to that wolf camp thing." I looked up at her, a horrified expression on my face.
"What? You can't do that!" I couldn't believe her! She knew how important that camp was to me!
"You should've thought of that before you got arrested. No go."
I went.
"Noeko!" I yelled, tripping over a huge stack of books I was using to hold open my door.
Fun day? He asked, an amused tone in his voice.
Now, let me explain something. Noeko is a stuffed animal. My special stuffed animal. And I talk to him. And pretend he talks back.
Get over it.
"No! I got arrested!" I said, plopping down on my bed beside him.
Again?
"Yes... Officer Dave says hi. But now mom won't let me go on the wolf biology camping trip!"
Maybe you should stop spray painting stuff. Just a suggestion.
"Maybe... c'mon. We're going for a walk." I said, pulling the window behind my bed open.
Are you allowed to?
"Probably not. Let's go." I grabbed him and a book, and crawled outside, headed for the nearby woods. "Did you know there are supposed to be wolves in this forest?" I asked, holding Noeko closer. It was getting dark, and an eerie silence had settled over forest.
Snap!
I spun around, and listened to the echo of a twig snapping in the distance. Was I being followed? No, I told myself, trying to reassure my frantically beating heart.
It didn't help.
You ready to turn back now, Mysty?
"No! Not until I get to read for a while."
Fine. Noeko said, obviously displeased with my decision.
Snap!
I began to jog toward my final destination, my heart beating so fast it felt like it would jump out of my throat. Calm yourself, Mysty, I thought, trying to ignore the sinking feeling of dread rolling around in my stomach. Nothing bad is going to happen...
A pair of hands reached out from behind a tree as I ran past and grabbed me, and slight pressure was applied to my temples. The last thing I remember before I passed out was a voice. "I don't want to hurt you, but I will if I have to."
((Fin~))
