(Chapter Two, though I doubt anyone has read chapter one yet. This one is short, just written to keep me busy and introduce one of the main charries and some things that are going to end up being important.)
Two
The sound of many horses thundering up the rode outside the city alerted the guards. Standing in front of the open gate the held their spears up to stop the party coming toward them. The man in the lead pulled his horse up and motioned for the others to stop. “Who rides with so many armed men into our city, and what is your business here?” One of the guards demanded.
Pulling off his helmet with the sound of clinking chain mail the first man smiled down at them, “Prince Jacob, and a squad of the Royal Army returning from the Casan border.” He informed them
The guards bowed hastily and moved out of the way so that the party could ride through. Inside the main wall was the sprawling city of Natele, capital city of Arlin. Kicking his horse forward the prince rode through the gates, followed by his men. As soon as the symbol of the Royal Army was seen on the men’s armor the rode cleared in front of them, leaving a clear path to the castle wall.
Inside the castle wall, whose gate had been thrown open as soon as the prince was recognized, the prince and the men parted ways. Jacob heading towards the royal stable and the soldiers breaking off to go around the back of the castle grounds to the barracks of the Royal Army.
Almost as soon as he had dismounted a stable hand was taking the reins of his two horses, one still tied behind the other, and beginning to lead them off. “I’d rather take care of them myself.” Jacob protested, reaching for the reins.
“Your highness, the king has requested your presence in the Council meeting chambers.” Another man said, appearing from the stable. When Jacob once again tried to protest he continued, “He said you are were to go as soon as you arrived. The representative from Amrt has arrived a day early and demanded an audience.”
With a reluctant nod the young man turned and jogged towards the castle, an imposing structure of gray stone that looked at points to be held together only by magic. It seemed his day of relaxing after returning from battle was going to have to wait awhile.
