Because it just "came" to me, I had to write it down.
Sorry if it spoils anything.
Cassie was dead. None of the parents or adults expected it to happen. But all of the table 12 girls did. They knew the risk of this game that they were playing, and they knew what would happen if they lost. Get fat, lose control, or die. They came to her funeral early, to early to view her. The adults were all in the other room talking, to give “the girls” some time alone.
“How could a fifteen year old’s heart just give out?” She heard her mother whisper to someone. Someone was sobbing, most likely Cassie’s mother. She was taking it pretty hard. Cassie was all that she had after Mr. Shaw left them all years ago, when Cassie was just a baby.
“Only the good die young!” She wailed. “How could He take my baby girl away from me like that?” she shrieked in hysterics. Then came the gentle murmurings of adults trying to comfort her.
Lavina walked away from the door that I was leaning against to eavesdrop. Turning around, she faced the other girls, grim faced. Most were teary eyed, some had a steely look, and L’hiver wasn’t trying to show emotion at all.
“Poor Cass,” Leah said in her quiet voice.
“None of us expected her to go like that,” Maddie said, wiping tears away and leaving a trail of smeared mascara. The whites of her eyes where red and her face was puffy from crying.
“Well then what did you expect?” Kendal demanded. “Sunshine and rainbows?”
“Kendal, that has nothing to do with this whatsoever.” Elaine said.
“Hell yes it does! You all were expecting nothing to happen to us. But too bad, we’ve all cursed ourselves.”
“Shut up! Just shut up Kendal, you don’t know what you’re saying!” Maddie said, bursting into tears again. Lavina sighed, and covered her head with her hands.
“Look, we should all just be quiet now. None of us are helping each other; we’re just making this nightmare even worse.” L’hiver said.
