Wreathing mists swirled over the landscape. Slinking, grey shadows slipped eerily through the icy veil, under the cold, solemn light of the majestic full moon. Howls tore the still night air to shreds. I could see the moon through the forked branches of a dead tree. Eying the snapping and snarling wolves I shifted nervously. Flashing eyes noticed my jerky movements. Wickedly gleaming teeth glinted dangerously, as a single grey-black wolf stepped forward towards me. Saliva was lashed against grinning teeth. The wolf howled, telling others of my location. An army joined him, an army of shining teeth and slashing claws. All this strength and carefully constructed power was against me. Was against my life. Thin rays of light broke through the dancing streams of mist. One sunbeam shone directly on me, lighting me up. DANGER!!! The hunt would not be under cover of darkness. It would be in full daylight! I ran. No. I rocketed. Fear gave wings to my feet. One wolf – the grey-black one – drew ahead of the pack. They were slowly running me down. Suddenly I stopped and turned around, my smoldering eyes full of hate. My ears twitched, my fur
bristled and I let loose a soft snarl, such a strange, bloodcurdling sound, that it threw the young wolf back on his haunches. Then I woke up with a yowl.
“MMMMMMRRRRRRROOOOWWWWWWW!!!!!”
I caterwauled, hurling myself from my cozy chair. Adrenaline surged through my body. I was shaking with nervous energy. I had been the enemy, a wolf! Also I had been the enemy of the enemy, an outlaw wolf! The enemy of my enemy is my friend huh? Pah! Right. I Decided that a peaceful tree-climbing expedition was in order to calm my nerves, I headed for the pine forest. I sharpened my claws on my favourite tree then started to climb. Halfway up the tree, perched delicately on a branch, I noticed the bear cub sitting about two metres from the foot of the tree. I also noticed the exceedingly angry mother climbing across the branch towards me. A clawed paw was racing towards me, but I never felt the blow.
“NNNHHHHHRRRRROOOOUUUGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!”
I screamed with all my might. “THE BEAR. CANT YOU SEE IT?”I was consumed by fear. My instincts told me to run, I listened, and I ran. Blindly rearing, bucking and kicking, with a snort or two for good measure. My senses started to clear, that’s when I saw the enormous tree ahead of me. I tried to swerve but it was to late, I ran headlong into the tree. The world exploded with colour, and then went dark.
Darkness that went on when I woke up. “Bad dreams, huh?” a voice came out of the shadows. Then a laugh, a cold, pitiless laugh. A heartless laugh. The laugh that told me, I wouldn’t be waking up this time.
