Stars twinkled above, seemingly tiny, insignificant things in the huge, dark sky, although at the moment, she could only see a circular shaped portion of it through the clearing of trees she was in./Those stars are so tiny and insignificant in the night sky... Just as I am small and insignificant in this huge, battle filled world,/ She thought. A small grin appeared on the tanned face of the 16 year old girl. /What war would come should they ever know about me?/
Ashley sighed, pushing herself up to a sitting position. Leaves fell of her back, drifting to the ground. She reached up and brushed a few more leaves from her black, waist length hair.
A barn owl hooted, flying past her, followed by several rodents and a couple deer. Being a curious person, she picked up her willow bow and steel tipped, swan feather arrows and went in the opposite direction the animals were going, to find out why they were fleeing.
She gasped at what she saw. A huge forest fire comsumed many trees, and the shouts of a few teenagers could be heard. She skirted around the forest and found an opening, spotting 5 youth. The three girls were huddled together, not saying much. One of the girls saw her waved her arms frantically, shouting for help. She pondered on the situation. /If I use my powers over fire to save them, they'll know I'm different, and next thing I know I'll be sitting in a lab, tubes sticking out of my skin and my arm being pricked my needles.. Plus, they probably weren't watching their campfire, and that's why this happened. But if I leave them, they'll surely die. Should I sacrifice human lives just to keep my secret safe?/
She looked down at her size eight shoes, walking away from the group. A tear rolled down her cheek. She couldn't risk it.
As horrified cries filled the night, shouts of /Murderer!/ echoed through her head. By not helping them, she may as well have conjured up fire and killed them herself.
As Ashley turned her back, the fire burned down slowly, and a path for the teenagers to safely escape formed. But no sighs of relief could be heard, no people calling, "C'mon, I see a way out!" She balled her hands into fists, not daring to look back. Did she act too late? Had her own fear of being discovered hindered her, preventing her from reacting fast enough?/Murderer!/ She fell onto her knees, sobbing and pounding the ground.
