As she awoke, Sorrel's heart began to pound furiously. What if none of them want me? Then what would she do?
Sorrel had been training for this moment since her mark was discovered so long ago, practicing fighting, control over fire, and how to choose her partner. But she had to admit it.
She was scared.
Today was the day she would venture down into the depths of the Caves of Flame, and choose the creature she would be with for the rest of her life. A dragon, of course, was preferable, but just the fact that she would be the one to receive a beautiful creature from the depths of fire made her grateful. "It could've been anyone else." She whispered "But you chose me..."

Ember quietly bent over the parchment before her staring at the message printed in ink:
Dear Chosen One, Your mark was discovered first at birth and it is my understanding that you underwent some training for you future. It was around this time that you were changed into what you are now...
Here she stopped reading for a moment and laughed. These humans didn't even have the guts to admit that she was, infact, now a vampire. But still, the letter intrigued her so she read on:
But the Caves of Flame are unwavering in all their decisions, and they must have known this would have been the path you would walk down. It is my request, no my demand that you return to us to recieve a fair amount of training, then to venture down to the Caves with the rest to choose your companion. Signed, The Messenger
Ember stared at the letter for a moment longer, reading it over. She sighed and decided she would go. A companion would be useful, what with James gone. Her expression instantly hardened and inside she shut down. He was gone, gone forever. She sighed and took out some paper and a pen and hurridly sketched onto the paper:
I will be coming. I am on my way. Ember She sighed and sent the letter on its way. Tomorrow she would make her way to the city she had left. For now she would sit and remember.

A dragoness flew around, clutching a letter in her finely hones, pearly claws. It read: Dear chosen one, Since your mark has been discovered and you have been undergoing serious training, nonetheless succeeding with extraordinary results, you have been deemed ready to enter the Caves of Flame. Congratulations, and I sincerely hope you have the best of a future. Signed, The messanger.
Emmery let out a stream of multi-coloured flames as she finished reading the letter. Finally, she was going! The beautiful dragoness' crystalline scales glimmered in the sunlight, making them reflect multi-coloured facets of light, like a prism. So, she tucked the letter in between her scales, and dove off, her rainbow-coloured eyes shining gleefully.

A dragon leapt from a shadow into the air. As soon as light hit her, she seemed to be a moonbeam, arcing across the sky to the Caves. Her mark pulled her here, for what reason she didn't know. Moonlight hovered for a moment before giving in to the pull and diving down into the Fire below. Inside the caves, her colour was pale, like the moon half hidden by clouds. Unknown to her, this would be where she would find here partner and would hone her unearthly skills of bending flames to her will..

Black hair whipped in the hot wind coming from the cave entrance before the woman. Staring into the depths of flame before her she smiled and matching flames sparked in her dark eyes. "The caves, finally. I can't enter yet, but soon, very soon." Turning away reluctantly the woman couldn't help but glance over her shoulder, the fire was calling her. "It's been so long." She frowned and pulled her black cloak tight around her shoulders as she walked away from the heat of the caves and into the cool midday sun.
Black flames danced up her arms without providing any warmth, but they were comforting. A letter was clenched in one of her burn scarred hands, slowly she opened it and smoothed it until it was readable. The outside was burned and warped but the message was still clear.
Dear Mal,
Your training was completed long ago and since then you have wandered, doing your best to fall off of the map. As you can tell it hasn't worked, we've found you and we're calling you to complete your part of our agreement. You don't have a choice, we'll find you wherever you run, so just once make it easy for us all. I know how much you want to enter the caves, they've called you all your life haven't they? But you have to wait just a few days longer my dear girl, you have to wait for the others.
Don't fail me again,
The messenger
On the back was a hastily scribbled reply.
I'll be there, waiting. Hurry though, because you're right, the flames call me and I won't stay long.
I hope you rot.
Mal
Crumpling it back into a ball Mal lit her hand on fire, when the fire went out the paper was gone. It hadn't burned, simply disappeared. With that done Mal sat against a tree to wait for whatever was sent her way.

Sorrel watched with mild interest as the woman stood in front of the caves. What was she doing here? Obviously, she couldn't have been a candidate, as she was much to old. Suddenly noticing the fire that poured across the lady's hand, Sorrel's eyes narrowed, her curiosity becoming a deep suspicion. A sorceress. Here to steal the secrets of the Caves? Not while Sorrel was around.
As far as she figured, if this was going to be her job someday- policing the continent that is- then she may as well start now.
So much for common sense.
She ran into the woman's line of sight and cleared her throat loudly. "Evil Sorceress!" She began "What the hell are you doing at the sacred Caves of Fire?" Sorrel was the exact image of a 13 year old. Dramatic, loud, and hardly ever used common sense.

"I'm not a sorceress, luv." Mal replied coldly, "And as for evil, that's still being debated. I'm assuming your one of their little candidates. If you are then you need to learn one lesson right now, don't rush into a fight with someone twice your age who has had much more time to train their powers." She thought the girl was somewhere between twelve and fourteen from her appearance, making Mal roughly twice her age at twenty seven.
Leaning against a tree Mal studied the girl, she looked so very innocent, it was almost sad that she had to be forced into the real world so soon. "The others will be here soon I have no doubt, they won't risk losing me by letting them delay. All we can do now is wait."

Moonlight heard a shout and the words within. Evil sorceress? She turned and stepped out of the caves again, with a low rumble of wariness. What's going on? she asked with thought-speak. She didn't know who either of these people were and wasn't about to trust them, not when she didn't even know why SHE was here.

"It's a dragon!" Sorrel squealed, forgetting about the 'sorceress'. She slowly walked over, admiring the gentle grace of the creature. "A dragon... Wow..."

"Yes, hon, it's a dragon." Mal said, looking the creature over. "Hmm, are you from the caves or are you going there?" She asked it calmly, meeting it's large eyes with her own.

Moonlight looked a bit taken aback by the loud squeal, but allowed the girl to look over her. She met the gaze of the lady squarely. Going. something in her voice suggested she wasn't sure why.

"Are you one of the chosen then?" Mal asked, slightly more interested. "I'm pretty sure the girl is, if she'd stop squealing long enough to give a straight answer I would ask." She had to admit the dragon was impressive and beautiful but, in her opinion, nothing to get that excited over.

Moonlight straightened and lifted her head. She was a young dragon and all this was confusing. I don't know. I'm Marked. Moon twisted around baring her flank. On it was a thin scar in the shape of a flame, though stylised and simplified. She knew that the Mark had pulled her here but beyond that, all was a mire of unknown things. Moon's Mark was harder to see now that light was shining on her and her scales had reflected with the queer, moonglow she got when that happened.

Mal took a few quick steps closer and studied the mark. Reaching out carefully she traced a finger around the edge of the flame. "You're one of us then. I have on as well." She pulled aside her cloak to show the right side of her neck. On the tanned skin was a clear, bright red burn mark in the shape of a flame. From that flame a red line extended to circle her entire neck like a collar. "My chains to a world I'd rather have nothing to do with."

Moon shivered slightly at the womans touch but studied the mark curiously. It's different from mine, just. she said, with a surprised tone. Shelifted her head and flared her wings before pulling them in tightly. Coming? she asked, turning toward the Caves with eager anticipation.
