Eve wasn't looking ahead of her. In fact, her eyes were wide and unseeing, lost in memories. So she didn't see a shadow slip after her, didn't see the rope lift. But she jerked when she heard the hiss of rope flying through the air, when it bit into her neck viciously. Her terrified cry was cut short by the lasso pulling her windpipe close. So she launched herself into the air, into the shadows clutches by doing what it planned, what it wanted. ********* Lunar heard her cry cut off and sprang higher in the air. He shot over the edge and plummeted after the tiny shape below that was Eve. "Eve!" his words were lost in the twisting winds of the clouds. "Eve!" Something hit his head and his eyes rolled up white. Then he was falling, down to the earth below. Gathering speed. ********* He awoke in a blaze of sunlight and amidst crushed vegetation. Eve was nowhere in sight and his head ached. Lunar dragged himself to his feet, staggering slightly. Looking around, he realised he was in the fabled Down-World. Other Winged Stracht -their word for horses- had ventured down and never returned. All except one. And that was Lunar’s father, Sairon. He hoped he would follow in his hoofprints. A rustle behind him made him turn, braced for attack. He flared his wings, as something started to push its way through the bushes on the opposite side of the clearing. A small bay foal leapt out. “Oh WOW!! I saw you; you came from up in the Sky. MUM!!! MUM!!! There’s a flying colt, come look!!” the bay’s voice was a shrill excited whinny that grated against Lunar’s head like a hedgehog in his skull. Then a harassed looking mare trudged out of the trees, shaking her head at her foal. “Cody! Stop harassing that young stallion! You know flying-colts don’t exist. Stop being silly.” She smiled apologetically at Lunar. “Sorry about that, I’m Belle. I hope—“ she broke off, staring at his pale gold wings. Lunar shuffled backwards. “I’m Lunar, I don’t suppose you—“ “LOOK Koora, he’s got WINGS!” came the excited and very audible whisper from the colt, who had been joined by a young filly. They stared at Lunar, giggled and stared some more. Lunar felt embarrassed, self-conscious and very scared. They hadn’t even seen a Winged Stracht before. So he planted his hooves firmly and spoke in a clear, determined voice. “I am looking for one other like me, she has been stolen.” Belle spoke up. “You are a proper Winged Stracht, right?” Lunar nodded. “Yes.” “So those wings, they ARE real?” “Yes, madam.” Lunar started to feel annoyed but kept his voice smooth and easy. “As I come from Sairon, The herd of a Thousand Markings, so I am Lunar of the Golden Hide. Please, I need help.” A strong voice rang out from behind Belle. “So you shall have it, Lunar, sired by Sairon. How is my old friend doing?” Lunar stared at the powerful overo stallion. “You know my Father?” “I do indeed. My name is Kiaren.”
Kiaren was a well-built black overo, with striking markings and intelligent brown eyes, mirroring the brain within. He was cunning and clever, as well as a great fighter and had been Sairon’s greatest friend when he was on the ground. Lunar now remembered his father speaking of him, in a friendly and trusting tone, though Lunar had assumed his father spoke of flying Stracht, not normal Stracht. Lunar pawed the ground restlessly and raised his head proudly. “I am in search of a filly, a strawberry roan by the name of Eve. She was stolen by a shadow.” There was laughter at this by some unkind horses, for now the entire herd had gathered. Lunar ignored them and carried on. “I would ask if you have heard, on the ground by the trees, or on the wings of the wind, anything of her.” Kiaren nodded. “Son of Sairon, I hear from an eagle of a shadow heading North. He takes with him an enchantment and cloaks himself with darkness. Meet the eagle, he shall help you. Follow the Western wind to the Ravine. That is where his eyrie rests. Seek it, for he is a loyal friend, even,” his eyes twinkled in spite of the grave situation, “Even when he speaks in riddles. Take heed to his words, boy, for they will help in times to come. Lunar, Go now into the world. Goodbye, Lunar, may we meet again.”
Lunar looked around in a kind of strangled panic. The green and the trees were so different to him, raised on the clouds as he was. But the breath of the West wing gave hope to his heart and he leapt into the air, to fall with a snort. The fall had torn a muscle in his wing. A weary whinny left him, as he began to trot through the forest, through glades and valleys, all bursting with life. Onwards he trotted as he began the search for his friend. To the Eagle, and to Eve. ****** Eve woke, feeling hazy and weird. When she tried to move, she couldn’t, as she was bound and blind. Darkness surrounded her and turned her situation into the stuff of nightmares. She had a pounding headache and knew something was wrong but she couldn’t grasp it, she couldn’t remember. She …couldn't quite…think.
