"So she's been missing for over twenty-four hours?" The policeman looked at the woman over the top of his clip board, where he had already jotted down several notes.
"Yes." Her mother said, a tear coming to her eye.
"Is there a possibility she ran away? Did you take something away from her? Something she loved?" Officer Dave sat down, taking Mysty's mom's hand in his.
"I told her she couldn't go on a camping trip she's been looking forward to... But there's no way she would've run away! Mysty isn't that kind of child."
"I see. You said you had some proof she was kidnapped?"
"Yes..." She stood up, and motioned for him to follow her to the door.
Outside, at the edge of the forest that surrounded their house, the ground was sprayed with blood, and there were footprints all around. Some were human, but some were not.
"What happened here?" Dave asked, shocked.
"I don't know."
"I'll have someone from downtown come take a look at this." He made a quick call on his radio, and said something about 'canine attacks, possibly some human involvement.'
"Human involvement?" Mysty's mom asked, looking worried.
"Yes miss, they could have set the dogs on your daughter." The pair returned to the house, awaiting the arrival of the other police.
*****
Seth and I circled each other slowly, fellow shifters watching the fight with mild interest. A large black wolf, Lupus probably, stood outside the circle they made, attempting to get in and stop us.
I wished him good luck trying.
I pounced, crashing into Seth's side, and we went down, a snarling mass of fur, fangs, and claws. He pinned me to the ground, a worried expression in his blue eyes. Throwing him off, I turned and pounced again, watching in delight as he slammed into Lupus, who had finally made it into the circle. Another wolf had made it as well, a brown one, and it was she who I now faced.
I was thrown to the ground and held there, the large wolf keeping me in place with a single paw. She barked something to Lupus, who pinned Seth to the ground. After that, the circle lost interest, and left me, Lupus, Seth, and the mysterious brown wolf to settle our problems.
One shifter, still in human form, tossed a pile of blankets our way, which Lupus and his mysterious female counterpart used to cover the four of us up (separately of course). Lupus, and his friend, back to being human, had theirs wrapped around them like a towel, and motioned for Seth and I to do the same. Once we had, there was hell to pay.
As usual.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" The female spat, glaring at us. I suspected she was Seth's mentor, as she, like Lupus, didn't look much older than twenty.
"I-"
"Be quiet Mysty." Lupus snarled, turning to the female. "Get your son out of here Lycaenion. And if I ever catch him around my apprentice again I will kill him." A scratch across his cheek oozed blood as he talked, coloring the right side of his face red.
"That little brat attacked Seth. You have no right to challenge him." She hissed, stepping protectively in front of her child.
"He deserved it, I'm sure." They all turned to me, as if expecting an explanation.
"He..." I bit the insides of my cheeks, not wanting to tell the story. "Yesterday, when I ran away, he had threatened me, and offered to pay for a hotel. I woke up this morning, and his arm was draped across me. Then, he made the stupid offer again..." I muttered, cheeks turning a bright red. Lycaenion turned to Seth, a disapproving look on her face.
The one only moms know how to do.
"Is all of this true Seth?" She asked, not sounding like she thought it was.
"Yes but I-"
"No. No buts. You're grounded."
"Yes." Her mother said, a tear coming to her eye.
