"You killed someone?" Satch asked, his voice tinted with disbelief. Where was Jaz with his parents? It didn't take that long to go find help. "Let me get this straight. Your boyfriend was shooting at you. So you shifted, and proceeded to kill him? And now the normals are after you?" He twitched, as his body began to shift, ripping out of his human clothes. Where Seth had sat, there was a large reddish-brown wolf. "Well, climb on. I'll take you back to camp."
Jaz stumbled over rocks as she ran, the sound of gunshots echoing behind her. "Satchel! Help!" She screamed. Behind her, Princess Yakumi and Prince Sorrel, her parents, were being tied to a tree, knives held to their throats as the savage normals questioned them. I told Satchel not to joke like that... she thought, as a dart of some kind found its way into her shoulder. Collapsing where she stood, Jaz let out a pathetic attempt at a whine before falling asleep.

Kayden listened to this with interest, the Shifter camp, -Shall we follow them?- he asked in thought speak so they could remain discreet.
Ember nodded and spoke, "We'll be heading off now." She felt them lift from the ground and soar into the air. She watched them closely, so as not to loose them. "Now, let's see where they'll go."

Satchel didn't get there in time.
When Jaz awoke, she was in a cage, surrounded by angry normals.
"The damn shapeshifter's awake!"
"How do you know its not just a normal fox?"
"I heard it talking!"
"Excuse me?" Jaz couldn't help interrupting. "It has a name. And unless you want a war on your hands, I suggest you let me go! Satchel!" A gloved hand covered her muzzle, and she snapped at it, trying to bite through the heavy fabric.
"Now calm down, animal. We just want the dog that killed one of us. Show us to her, and we will leave."
"Besides, why would the shifters risk war for you? You're nothing but a mangy little thing."
"I'm the princess!" She tried to yell. Instead, because of the hand over her mouth, it came out sounding like, A dah pwincea!

A regal bird of prey with silky black feathers, so dark that they seemed to absorb the light, sat on the shoulder of the man whose vile gloved hand covered the princess's mouth. The hawk turned its scrutinizing green gaze on the shifter being held captive and slowly began to inch down the man's arm, coming to a stop when his deadly talons were harmlessly seperated from the man's wrist by the falconry gloves.
Siyaverre cocked his head to the side, acting like a normal hawk should. A bloodcurdling screech was let loose as he straightened back up and began to preen himself, seemingly unimpressed by the fox. He idly smoothed his feathers with that wickedly curved beak, while he began to think, deciding how best to get her out of there.
Most of all, would it mean putting his post as a spy in jeopardy? Who cared. This was more important - he had to get her out.

Ember had decided, she was going to help the shifters. Better to help her fellow mythical creatures than the humans. She and Kayden landed next to Satchel, "Jaz has been captured, she's Northwest of here. I could stay with her," she guestured towards the injured girl, "if you want to go find her."

Jaz lay down, and they fastened a muzzle, like the kind used for dogs on her.
"That's better."
"She'll sell for a good price on the black market."
"Yeah... but her parents! Imagine how much the rulers of the fox and wolf clans will fetch!"
Looking up at the beautiful hawk, Jaz whimpered softly. Please... help... she thought. A second dart was stuck into her neck, and she fell asleep. The last thing she remembered before passing out was a huge red wolf snarling as he pounced on the normals... ***** Satchel watched as his little sister was thrown in the cage, a light growl coming to his throat. Patience... But when they muzzled her, like a common animal, that was when he drew the line. He left Sarah under a bush, and charged, a feral snarl twisting his face.

No time to think. That luxury was taken away as the snarling wolf attacked—familiar, Siyaverre thought, though he seemed to have misplaced the name. He turned suddenly and struck, catching the gloved man (his would-be "owner") off guard. The man screamed in agony, clutching at his eyes as they were raked out of his face.
Using the wolf as a distraction, Siyaverre fluttered down and began to claw at the lock, managing to get a few scratches on it. He screeched in frustration, hopping over to the man he had wounded and dug around in his pockets for the key he knew he had somewhere. Finally he found a ring of keys.
Damn! he thought, clumsily fitting the first key in with his beak. This is definitely not working.

Pausing for a moment in his massacre, Satchel looked over to the hawk, a confused look on his face.
Of course, a moment is all one needs to regain control. The last normal standing grabbed three of the darts they often used to capture the shifters without killing them, and plunged them deep into Satchel's shoulder.
Of course, karma got to him. Several moments later, he fell from severe blood loss.
Satchel looked up at the hawk as his vision began to fade, pleading with him. "Save her... please." His large head fell upon his paws, and he fell asleep.
Forever.
"SATCHEL!" His mother screamed, awaking in time to see him overdosed with the sleeping crap the normals had injected her with. "My baby!" She fell back, sobbing as the light faded from Satchel's once beautiful amber eyes.

Siyaverre made a strange noise as he looked over at Satchel, the would-be hero. He seized the darts in his talons and yanked, in an effort to take them out before they could fully drain into him. In vain, in vain, my good man. Stricken, he stared at Satchel, frozen in place. Duty kicked in. He looked around quickly to make sure there truly wasn't anyone standing and returned to the cage where the princess was unconscious, painstakingly tried another key.
There has to be a faster way, he grumbled in his thoughts. An idea struck him, but... what if she woke up? Best take his chances, in case one of the humans wakes up. He shifted quickly into his human form and yanked the key from the lock. It was complicated, because they all fit, but would not turn. As he grew more and more desperate, the number of keys he had left to try dwindled.
“Come on, come on,” he muttered. He was on the second to last key. It turned easily, and the lock popped open. He opened the cage and reached in, plucking the dart from Jaz's neck and easing the muzzle from her face. He carefully picked her up. She was satisfyingly heavy on his back... As he turned, he eyed the male, sadness threatening to overwhelm him, replaced by a cold anger. “You were great, buddy,” he muttered, patting the wolf's shoulder.
He heard a strangled cry, SATCHEL! Startled, he looked around. Satchel. That was his name... strangely, the vague image of a wolf pup playing with him - then, a tiny thing who had just learned how to fly - in a clearing in the forest.
Satchel. It was a direct blow to his heart - so long ago. He had forgotten. “I got her for you.” He turned slowly, saw the man who had plunged the offending darts into Satchel. Siya scowled and made a point to grab a few darts and stab the man with them. The man convulsed, and he wasn't sure whether to feel accomplished or like a murderer. But he was avenging Satchel, he figured. Murder the murderer.

Jaz shifted around on her rescuer's back, her mother's scream jolting her awake.
"What... happened?" She looked down at him, a slightly confused look on her face. Oh god he's naked. She realized. Well, of course he was. Human clothes don't really fit hawks, now do they? "Who are you! Where's my brother!" She screamed, panicking. Who was this guy? Obviously a shifter, seeing as he had freed her, but was he one who could be trusted?

“I'm Siyaverre,” he said as calmly as he could, when he felt Jaz awaken. He gently put her down then shifted back into a hawk and began to preen, something he did when he wanted to think. Also, he didn't particularly feel like being in all of his naked glory, not in front of her. “I was a spy, until I decided to rescue you—” He frowned.
“Your brother...,” Here he figured her brother was Satchel, “He came to try and save you when you went unconscious—” Yes, that would explain the mass of dead, dying or simply unconscious men on the ground. In the middle was the red wolf. “He's...” He couldn't bring himself to say it. Dead. Asleep, and he'll never wake up again.
She deserved to know. “He got three darts put in his shoulder,” Siyaverre said miserably, trying to make his voice as soft, as gentle as he could.

Ember alighted where Jaz and Siaverre were sitting, "Okay what was with the mass murder back there." She jerked her thumb over her shoulder towards the place where Jaz had been held prisoner. I was following Satchel and then everyone's getting killed with some darts. "So," she concluded, "who wants to explain?"

Siya looked at Ember, his hawk face intense and placid. “That's all I know,” he said, “I only know that the princess”—he nodded at Jaz—“was in need of rescuing from the cage, or else those human bastards would sell her to the black market... or whatever other nasty thing they were planning.
Then Satchel came practically flying out of that bush over there, and I attacked Johnson, found the keys, Satchel got three darts put in him, I pulled them out when I saw, opened the cage, and here we are.”

"Does that mean..." Satchel? Dead? That... that was impossible. Jaz felt a deep pain in her chest as it sunk in.
Her twin was gone.
And he wasn't coming back.

Ember nodded quietly and looked over at Jaz. As unlike her as it was for her to show compassion, she did know. She walked over and sat next to Jaz and put her hand over her shoulder. She felt it was right to comfort her, she knew how it was to loose your other half.
You complete me. You are my other half. And now that you are gone; I do not have the right to live, But I will keep breathing, knowing it is what you would have wanted.
